Course Description

This course provides teachers with strategies for programming and teaching Year 12 Extension 1: Literary Worlds. Teachers will learn how to best approach teaching the focus area in the time available and how to leverage aspects of the Year 11 Extension 1 English and Year 12 Advanced English courses. From here, teachers will learn about the value of students developing a portfolio of writing as a means of demonstrating a strong conceptual understanding of Literary Worlds, before moving on to consider ways of modelling and scaffolding responses to examination questions. The course concludes with a focus on crafting effective feedback.

1. Approaching Literary Worlds

This session offers a clear and structured approach to teaching the Literary Worlds focus area. Emphasis is placed on building strong conceptual understanding, making purposeful use of teaching time, and preparing students to respond confidently to the demands of the HSC examination.

In this session, you will:

2. Leveraging Vertical and Horizontal Alignment across Extension 1 and Advanced English

This session demonstrates how key components of the Year 11 Extension 1 and Year 12 Advanced courses can be strategically leveraged to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding, research practices, and writing.

In this session, you will:

  • Explore how the Year 11 Extension 1 English Related Research Project can be used as a foundation for developing independent inquiry skills and theoretical thinking in preparation for Literary Worlds.

  • Examine how Year 12 Advanced: The Craft of Writing can be repurposed to support the development of sophisticated, voice-driven writing in Extension 1.

  • Learn how to align skills, concepts, and expectations across courses to create a coherent and manageable Extension 1 teaching program.

3. Improving Students’ Critical and Creative Writing

This session focuses on the explicit teaching of critical and creative writing within the Literary Worlds focus area. Emphasis is placed on building students’ conceptual control, strengthening written responses, and supporting sustained engagement with unseen texts.

In this session, you will:

  • Explore the value of developing a portfolio of critical and creative writing as evidence of students’ conceptual understanding of Literary Worlds.

  • Examine practical ways to model and scaffold responses to HSC-style examination questions.
