Steering Standard English

This course is a practical, teacher-focused course designed to build confidence and clarity in planning and delivering the NSW Stage 6 Standard English course. The course unpacks how to purposefully approach each HSC focus area—Texts and Human Experiences, Language, Identity and Culture, and Close Study of Literature—while showing how to structure a coherent teaching and learning program that is tightly aligned to syllabus outcomes and content.

Participants will explore how to use formative assessment strategically to support student growth, with a particular emphasis on developing writing skills across the course, including The Craft of Writing. With an emphasis on clear sequencing, explicit instruction, and manageable assessment practices, this course supports teachers to steer students toward confident reading, thinking, and writing in Standard English.
