This study of selected poems of Simon Armitage promises an immersive exploration of the human condition, the interplay between individual and collective history, and the impact of historical events on ordinary people.

Throughout this unit, students will consider a range of Armitage's poems drawn from his debut 1989 collection Zoom! to his most recent Poet Laureate poems. These include: ‘It Ain't What You Do, It's What It Does to You’, ‘Poem’, ‘November’, ‘About his Person’, ‘Out of the Blue’, ‘Conquistadors’, ‘Resistance’, and ‘An Unexpected Guest’.

With a focus on literary analysis and critical thinking, students will embark on a transformative empathic journey into the depths of the human experience, as portrayed through Armitage's masterful poetic voice.
