An online professional learning course exploring approaches to teaching the prescribed poems of TS Eliot in the context of HSC English Advanced Module B: Critical Study of Literature.

Course Description

This course provides teachers with an approach to teaching the prescribed poems of TS Eliot in the context of HSC English Advanced Module B: Critical Study of Literature. The course focuses on a variety of thinking routines, protocols, and classroom activities for teaching the prescribed poems.

Modules

Module 1: Critical study of Literature (1 hour)

Webinar Session: 9:00am-10:00am

In this module, participants will:

  • Consider the Module B course descriptor - in particular the focus on students developing an informed personal understanding of the prescribed text.

  • Learn teaching strategies for unpacking the course descriptor with students.

  • Learn a variety of practical classroom activities that can be used to help students get to grips with what it means to engage in a critical study of a literary text.

Module 2: Essential context (1 hour)

Webinar Session: 10:30am-11:30am

In this module, participants will:

  • Be presented with an overview of the essential context of TS Eliot’s poetry.

  • Learn about a variety of classroom activities suitable for encouraging student engagement with context.

Module 3: Preludes, Prufrock, and Rhapsody (1 hour)

Webinar Session: 12:00pm-1:00pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn how to use a variety of thinking routines and protocols that can be used to teach these poems.

  • Consider the ways imaginative writing activities can be integrated to encourage students to think critically about the ideas of a diseased and decaying city in ‘Preludes’

  • Consider the ways discursive writing activities can be integrated to encourage students to think critically about the ways Prufrock communicates the difficulties of connecting with others in a modern urban environment.

  • Consider the ways imaginative writing activities can be integrated to encourage students to adopt the position of the flâneur and observe their own surroundings in detail.

Module 4: The Hollow Men and Journey of the Magi (1 hour)

Webinar Session: 1:30pm-2:30pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn how to use a variety of thinking routines and protocols that can be used to teach these poems.

  • Learn how to use the Microlab Protocol to encourage students to think critically about ‘The Hollow Men’.

  • Consider the ways a multimodal task can enrich students’ understanding of ‘Journey of the Magi’.

Module 5: developing student critical thinking and composing skills (1 hour)

Webinar Session: 2:45pm-3:45pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn about activities for improving students’ ability to draw connections between the poems.

  • Learn strategies for improving students’ engagement with, and understanding of, literary criticism about TS Eliot’s poetry.


Materials

The core text for this course is The Poetry of TS Eliot Student Book by Emily Bosco and Anthony Bosco.

The eBook edition of this student book is included in the course fee.

  • Once you have successfully registered, you will receive a link to the course.

  • The course takes place on Sunday 30th March 2025. There is a live 1 hour Webinar session for each module. To maximise course interaction, it is best to attend these sessions.

  • In the event that you are unable to attend a session, you will be able to access a recorded version of each session for a period of 30 days after the conclusion of the course.
