This course provides teachers with strategies for programming and teaching The Craft of Writing focus area. Teachers will learn about a variety of thinking routines and protocols for teaching aspects of craft using a range of texts as both models of effective writing and stimulus for interesting and effective writing. From here, teachers will examine the discursive writing and reflective commentary writing styles in detail, before moving on to consider a strategy for improving student ability to write competently in the discursive, imaginative, persuasive, and reflective styles. The course concludes with a focus on integrating rich Craft of Writing style classroom activities into the teaching and learning programs for the other HSC focus areas.

Modules
Module 1: Teaching aspects of craft using model texts (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 9:00am-10:00am
In this module, participants will:
Learn to use a selection of practical teaching strategies and thinking routines to focus student attention on writing craft in a variety of texts.
Be presented with a strategy for moving from the selection of a model text, to examining aspects of craft, to setting a Craft of Writing exam-style question for students to complete.
Module 2: Discursive writing (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 10:30am-11:30am
In this module, participants will:
Be presented with an overview of discursive writing as a distinctive writing style.
Consider a variety of discursive pieces written in different textual forms.
Learn to use the 3-2-1 protocol to teach students the main aspects of discursive writing.
Module 3: Reflective Commentary Writing (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 12:00pm-1:00pm
In this module, participants will:
Be presented with an overview of the reflective commentary writing style and its distinctive features.
Consider the proposed scaffold for teaching students how to write a reflective commentary.
Module 4: Developing Student Composing skills across the writing styles (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 1:30pm-2:30pm
In this module, participants will:
Learn about the Evolving Writing Task strategy for improving students’ ability to write competently in the imaginative, persuasive, discursive, and reflective writing styles.
Consider a worked example of this strategy.
Module 5: Integrating The Craft of Writing into other focus area Programs (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 2:45pm-3:45pm
In this module, participants will:
Be presented with ways of integrating imaginative, persuasive, discursive, and reflective tasks into other focus areas to increase student exposure to these writing styles.
Consider a variety of examples of these tasks.
Materials
The core text for this course is Mastering the Craft of Writing Student Book (2nd Edition) by Emily Bosco and Anthony Bosco.
The eBook edition of this student book is included in the course fee.

The course takes place on Friday 28th March 2025. There is a live 1 hour Webinar session for each module. To maximise course interaction, it is best to attend these sessions.
In the event that you are unable to attend a session, you will be able to access a recorded version of each session for a period of 30 days after the conclusion of the course.

Participants will be enrolled in the course upon receipt of their registration form.
For registrations submitted via the School 30-Day Account option, an invoice will be issued upon receipt of the registration form. The payment terms are 30 days from the invoice date.
Failure to pay the course registration fee by the invoice due date will result in the cancellation of enrolment and removal from the course.
