Course Description

This course explores the new NSW Stage 6 Advanced English Course. In three webinars, teachers will become familiar with syllabus changes and the course structure and requirements, consider text selection and patterns of study, and improve their understanding of the performance band descriptors.

  • NSW Secondary English teachers preparing to teach the Advanced English course.


Modules

Module 1: the new Advanced english syllabus (1 hour)

Webinar Session: Thursday 15th May 3:30pm-4:30pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Be presented with an overview of the new syllabus and the key changes.

  • Get to grips with the course structure and requirements.

Module 2: text selection & patterns of study (1 hour)

Webinar Session: Thursday 22nd May 3:30pm-4:30pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Be presented with an overview of the requirements for HSC text selection.

  • Consider the implications of these requirements on the creation of a pattern of study, particularly in relation to opportunities for creating units of work that ensure students engage with:

    • Literature from Australia and across the world

    • Literature that develops their understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the interconnections of Country/Place, Culture and Community.

    • Classic and contemporary texts that represent a range of cultural and social perspectives, broadening their experiences and empowering them in their identities, values and ethics.

  • Consider the merits of a variety of sample patterns of study.

Module 3: High Achieving Responses (1 hour)

Webinar Session: Thursday 29th May 3:30pm-4:30pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Consider the outcomes and performance band descriptors for what these reveal about the knowledge, understanding, and skills students need to achieve at a high level in the English Advanced course.

  • This course takes place in the Into English online learning environment, which is powered by WebinarJam.

  • Once you have successfully registered, you will receive a link to the course.

  • The course takes place on Thursday 15th May, Thursday 22nd May, and Thursday 29th May 2025. There is a live 1 hour Webinar session for each module. To maximise course interaction, it is best to attend these sessions.

  • In the event that you are unable to attend a session, you will be able to access a recorded version of each session for a period of 30 days after the conclusion of the course.

  • Registrations are open until the closing date listed above.

  • Participants will be enrolled in the course upon receipt of their registration form.

  • For registrations submitted via the School 30-Day Account option, an invoice will be issued upon receipt of the registration form. The payment terms are 30 days from the invoice date.

  • Failure to pay the course registration fee by the invoice due date will result in the cancellation of enrolment and removal from the course.
