Course Description
This course provides teachers with an approach to teaching William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I in the context of HSC English Advanced Module B: Critical Study of Literature. The course focuses on a variety of thinking routines, protocols, and classroom activities for teaching the play.

Modules
Module 1: Critical study of Literature (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 9:00am-10:00am
In this module, participants will:
Consider the Module B course descriptor - in particular the focus on students developing an informed personal understanding of the prescribed text.
Learn teaching strategies for unpacking the course descriptor with students.
Learn a variety of practical classroom activities that can be used to help students get to grips with what it means to engage in a critical study of a literary text.
Module 2: Essential context (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 10:30am-11:30am
In this module, participants will:
Be presented with an overview of the essential context of Henry IV, Part I.
Learn about a variety of classroom activities suitable for encouraging student engagement with context.
Module 3: History and Comedy (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 12:00pm-1:00pm
In this module, participants will:
Be presented with an overview of the ways Shakespeare has blended historical and comic material together and the implications of this.
Learn how to use a variety of thinking routines and protocols that can be used to think critically about the blending of genres in the play.
Module 4: Mirroring and Textual Cohesion (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 1:30pm-2:30pm
In this module, participants will:
Be presented with an overview of some of the different literary and dramatic devices Shakespeare has used to ensure the play is cohesive and unified in terms of language, content, and construction.
Learn how to use a variety of different activities, thinking routines, and protocols that can be used to encourage students to think critically about how textual cohesion is created in the play.
Consider the integration of a discursive writing activity designed to encourage students to think critically about mirroring and textual cohesion.
Module 5: developing student critical thinking and composing skills (1 hour)
Webinar Session: 2:45pm-3:45pm
In this module, participants will:
Learn strategies for improving students’ engagement with, and understanding of, literary criticism about Henry IV, Part I.
Consider the ways a multimodal task can enrich students’ understanding of the play as a whole by allowing them to express their informed personal understanding of Henry IV, Part I in a form that is both creative and critical.

The core text for this course is Henry IV, Part I Student Book by Emily Bosco and Anthony Bosco.
The eBook edition of this student book is included in the course fee.

The course takes place on Wednesday 19th March 2025. There is a live 1 hour Webinar session for each module. To maximise course interaction, it is best to attend these sessions.
In the event that you are unable to attend a session, you will be able to access a recorded version of each session for a period of 30 days after the conclusion of the course.
