Course Description

This course provides teachers with strategies for programming and teaching the Year 12 Extension 1 Elective 2: Worlds of Upheaval. Teachers will consider prescribed and related text selection, along with strategies for developing students’ integrated analysis responses. From here, teachers will learn how to map the elective and build cohesion between texts from the outset of the study, before moving on to learn strategies for teaching Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, and Seamus Heaney’s poetry. The course concludes with strategies for modelling and scaffolding responses to examination questions and a focus on crafting effective feedback.

Modules

Module 1: Approaching Worlds of Upheaval (1.5 hours)

Webinar Session: 9:30am-11:00am

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn how to best approach teaching Worlds of Upheaval, including a consideration of prescribed and related text selection, to ensure students develop a strong understanding of how writers represent times of upheaval.

  • Learn strategies for developing students’ integrated analysis responses.

Module 2: Cohesive Teaching - Part 1 (1.5 hours)

Webinar Session: 11:30am-1:00pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn how to map the elective and build cohesion between texts from the outset of the study.

  • Learn how to integrate teaching of prescribed and related texts.

  • Learn strategies for teaching Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Module 3: Cohesive Teaching - part 2 (1.5 hours)

Webinar Session: 1:30pm-3:00pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn strategies for teaching Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Seamus Heaney’s poetry.

  • Consider ways of modelling and scaffolding responses to examination questions that ensures an integrated treatment of texts and a cohesive line of argument.

  • Learn strategies for offering effective feedback to students, which foregrounds the importance of close engagement with the given question, a well-developed understanding of how writers represent times of upheaval, integration of relevant contextual knowledge, control of language and form, and clear and precise written communication.

  • There is a live 1.5 hour Webinar session for each module. To maximise course interaction, it is best to attend these sessions.

  • In the event that you are unable to attend a session, you will be able to access a recorded version of each session for a period of 30 days after the conclusion of the course.

The Fine Print

  • Registrations are open until Friday 7th March 2025.

  • Participants will be enrolled in the course upon completion of the registration process.

  • For registrations submitted via the School 30-Day Account option, an invoice will be issued upon receipt of the registration form. The payment terms are 30 days from the invoice date.

  • Failure to pay the course registration fee by the invoice due date will result in the cancellation of enrolment and removal from the course.
