Course Description

This course provides teachers with strategies for programming and teaching the Year 12 Extension 1 Common Module: Literary Worlds. Teachers will learn how to best approach teaching the module in the time available and how to leverage aspects of the Year 11 Extension 1 English and Year 12 Advanced English courses. From here, teachers will learn about the value of students developing a portfolio of writing as a means of demonstrating a strong conceptual understanding of Literary Worlds, before moving on to consider ways of modelling and scaffolding responses to examination questions. The course concludes with a focus on crafting effective feedback.

Modules

Module 1: Approaching the Common Module (1.5 hours)

Webinar Session: 9:30am-11:00am

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn how to best approach teaching the Common Module to ensure students develop a strong conceptual understanding of Literary Worlds.

  • Learn how to make the best use of the indicative hours available for teaching the Common Module.

  • Consider past HSC examination questions and learn strategies for enhancing student preparedness, including close reading and written analysis of unseen texts.

Module 2: Assembling the jigsaw puzzle (1.5 hours)

Webinar Session: 11:30am-1:00pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn how to leverage the Year 11 Extension 1 English Related Research Project.

  • Learn how to leverage the Year 12 Advanced Module C; The Craft of Writing.

Module 3: Improving students’ critical and creative Writing (1.5 hours)

Webinar Session: 1:30pm-3:00pm

In this module, participants will:

  • Learn about the value of students developing a portfolio of critical and creative writing as a means of demonstrating a strong conceptual understanding of Literary Worlds.

  • Consider ways of modelling and scaffolding responses to examination questions.

  • Learn strategies for offering effective feedback to students, which foregrounds the importance of close engagement with unseen texts and the given question, a well-developed conceptual understanding of Literary Worlds, control of language and form, and clear and precise written communication.

  • This course takes place in the Into English online learning environment, which is powered by WebinarJam.

  • Once you have successfully registered, you will receive a link to the course.

  • There is a live 1.5 hour Webinar session for each module. To maximise course interaction, it is best to attend these sessions.

  • In the event that you are unable to attend a session, you will be able to access a recorded version of each session for a period of 30 days after the conclusion of the course.
