In On the Road, students are presented with an enriching study of a variety of classic and contemporary texts relating to travel. These include documentaries, non-fiction texts, poems, and feature articles. The core text for this unit of work is series 1 of the comedic travel documentary Travels with My Father by Jack Whitehall.

By engaging with these texts, students will develop a range of skills for understanding, analysing, and making judgements about texts related to travel. This includes practical, real-world skills such as finding and comprehending accurate information about travel destinations, health advice, safety information, and government regulations.

On the Road also links to other related subject areas across the curriculum, helping students to develop an understanding of social and cultural practices, global issues, tourism, and the environment. Some activities also involve financial literacy such as developing budgets and planning for travel experiences.

Over the course of this study, students have the opportunity to discover the ways that a range of texts showcase the deep and personal impacts that travel can have. Through considering the language of the texts, students will learn about how literature can offer insights into different places, peoples, and cultures.
