This course runs from week 6 of Term 2 until week 3 of Term 3 (NSW school term dates). There will be no classes during the holiday break (3rd July-16th July, 2017).


Course Description

This course has been designed for Stage 6 English teachers who have HSC Advanced English classes studying the prescribed poems of Judith Wright for Module C: Representing People and Landscapes. Over 8 weeks teachers will explore how to make the study of Judith Wright's poetry in the context of representing people and landscapes an accessible and enjoyable experience for students. A variety of suitable related texts will also be covered. The modules in the course are designed to assist teachers in three key ways:

  1. Achieving a sophisticated conceptual understanding of the relationship between people and landscapes
  2. Promoting student engagement with the prescribed poems
  3. Pushing for depth in student thinking

Target Audience

This course is designed for Secondary English teachers who are interested in improving their approach to teaching the poetry of Judith Wright in the context of HSC English Module C: Representation and Text. The strategies suggested can be implemented in the classroom as the teacher progresses through the course.

Working Online

This course takes place in the Into English online learning environment. Once you have successfully registered, you will be added into our system and you will receive your login details. The course begins on the advertised start date, and a new module will be unlocked for you each week. There are no set times where you will have to be online for webinars or live conferences. Rather, you will have access to specific course materials in each module, and are required to complete a relevant practical activity, before reporting back to the group online. 

Each module requires 2 hours to complete. 

Modules

Module 1: Course Outline and Getting Started

An overview of the course, expectations, and getting set up in the online learning environment. 

Module 2: Thinking Conceptually About People and Landscapes

In this module, participants will learn about key theoretical concepts that can be called upon to improve student understanding and engagement within this elective. Participants will also learn a variety of engaging individual and collaborative classroom activities that can be used to teach these concepts.

Module 3 and Module 4: 'The Hawthorn Hedge', 'For New England', and 'Brother and Sisters'

In these modules, participants will learn strategies for conducting a close analysis of these poems, along with a variety of engaging individual and collaborative classroom activities. The related text ‘A Dreamer’ by Barbara Baynton will be considered alongside these poems.

Module 5: ‘South of My Days’

In this module, participants will learn strategies for conducting a close analysis of this poem, along with a variety of engaging individual and collaborative classroom activities. The related texts ‘Sunday Evening’ by Russell Drysdale and 'A Little World Left Behind' by Henry Lawson will be considered alongside this poem.

Module 6: ‘Flame-Tree in a Quarry’ and ‘Train Journey’

In this module, participants will learn strategies for conducting a close analysis of these poems, along with a variety of engaging individual and collaborative classroom activities. The related texts ‘Land’ by Jack Davis and 'We Call Them Pirates Out Here' by Daniel Boyd will be considered alongside these poems.

Module 7: ‘Moving South’

In this module, participants will learn strategies for conducting a close analysis of this poem, along with a variety of engaging individual and collaborative classroom activities.

Module 8: Approaches for Connecting the Texts Together

A variety of activities focusing on different approaches students can use to form meaningful connections between the poems and related texts will be considered and tested in this module.

The cost of registration includes the following course materials:

  • The Poetry of Judith Wright Student Book by Emily Bosco

Participants will receive these materials by the course commencement date.

Completing the Poetry of Judith Wright Online Course will contribute 16 hours of NESA registered PD addressing Standard 2 and Standard 3 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher accreditation in NSW.
