Course Description

This course provides teachers with strategies for programming and teaching discursive writing in Stage 4 and Stage 5 English. Teachers will learn about a variety of thinking routines and protocols for examining and analysing pieces of discursive writing with students, before moving on to consider strategies and activities for improving students ability to write competently in the discursive style. The course concludes with a focus on designing and assessing rich discursive writing tasks.

Sessions

Session 1: The Discursive writing Style (60 minutes)

In this session, participants will:

  • Be presented with an overview of the importance, purpose, and distinctive features of the discursive writing style.

  • Take part in a discussion focused on their experiences of teaching discursive writing in Stage 4 and Stage 5 English, including the opportunities and challenges it presents.

Session 2: Examining and Analysing discursive writing (120 minutes)

In this session, participants will:

  • Consider a variety of discursive pieces that are relevant to, and suitable for, students in Years 7-10.

  • Be presented with a method of teaching and scaffolding discursive writing.

  • Learn to use the 3-2-1 protocol to teach students how to examine and analyse examples of discursive writing, as well as how to use this protocol to plan and evaluate their own discursive writing.

Session 3: Designing and Assessing Discursive Writing Tasks (120 minutes)

In this session, participants will:

  • Learn how to design a rich individual and collaborative discursive writing task to assess students’ ability to compose in this style.

  • Be presented with a variety of example tasks to consider.

  • Have the opportunity to design their own discursive writing task for integration into a specific Stage 4 or Stage 5 English program.


Materials

All participants will receive a course book containing all course materials on the day.
